As a player Brooks was an apprentice at Crystal Palace before joining Leyton Orient and then moving on to AFC Bournemouth.

He made nearly 150 appearances for the club between 1987 and 1993 before spending a season with Dorchester Town. He made one final appearance for the Cherries before moving back to Leyton Orient in 1994.

After 58 appearances he retired from playing and went on to qualify as a sports therapist.

He had stints as manager with non-league sides Ringwood Town and Bournemouth Poppies before becoming Youth Team manager at former Premier League Portsmouth.

He then returned to the non-league as manager of Dorchester Town after being offered the role by Eddie Mitchell who was Dorchester chairman at the time.

He resigned after 19 months in charge in January 2009.

Brooks was handed another job in football by Eddie Mitchell when he took over as Head of Youth at the Cherries Centre of Excellence in 2010 and was placed as Paul Groves assistant in March 2012 following the departure of Lee Bradbury.

After eight games as assistant to Groves, the duo were given the job on a permanent basis signing a new two year contract, but they didn't last in the job long and were sacked 12 games later in October 2012. Nine days later after the appointment of Eddie Howe as manager Brooks was offered his previous role in the youth set-up.

He left Dean Court in January 2014.
