He also gained managerial experience whilst at Grimsby when he was player-manager at the club from December 2001 until February 2004.

Following his retirement from playing in 2006 he joined the coaching staff at Portsmouth and during this time he worked with Shaun Brooks.

In 2010 he was part of the coaching set-up at West Ham but left the club following their relegation from the Premier League.

AFC Bournemouth announced Paul Groves as the new Cherries youth team manager in July 2011.

Groves replaced Joe Roach who left the club after 10 years in the role in June 2011.

In March 2012 he was placed in charge of first team affairs after the departure of Lee Bradbury.

He took charge of the final eight games of the season, winning two, drawing four and losing two.

On 11th May 2012 he signed a new two year contract as AFC Bournemouth manager, Shaun Brooks was announced as his assistant but after just 20 games in charge, he was sacked on 3rd October 2012, with a record of just 3 wins in 20 games (in all competitions), drawing 11 and losing 6, scoring 22, whilst conceding 29.

After the appointment of Eddie Howe as manager nine days later, Groves was offered his previous role in the youth set-up.

He left Dean Court in January 2014.
