The former Chairman of Dorchester Town Football Club, became part of a consortium which took over AFC Bournemouth in June 2009 alongside Neill Blake, Adam Murry, Jeff Mostyn and Steve Sly.

On 22nd June 2009 Mitchell was announced as the new Chairman of AFC Bournemouth.

During his four year spell at the club, the Cherries enjoyed two promotions, climbing up the Football League pyramid from the bottom of League Two up to the Championship.

On 2nd September 2013, he sold his families shareholding in the club to Russian businessman Maxim Demin and stood down as the clubs chairman.
