You guys know that I am a relative newbie by comparison, so I am wondering if the stats that I came across have any significance. For 2016-17, I saw that we were at 51.1%. For this season so far, 47.5%. It does seem to me that last year we were pass-pass-pass before going in, while this year we seem to be doing this less. Does this mean anything? Thanks.

Possession stats don't necessarily mean we are passing it any less. I dare say there is a total passes and every passes per match stat somewhere.

The lower possession stat is probably more an indication that we are more patient without the ball, allowing the opposition to hold on to it for longer whilst we for example, get back into shape with less pressing to win the ball back immediately.

I saw Ibe in an interview recently (think it was Ibe) saying that they have done way more training for off the ball play this season- and it shows. We look far more confident without the ball overall this season.

We also played a 5 man midfield for a large part of last season which included Wilshere... The result was a lot of inane pointless possession.
