New Signing

Don't think I can recall anyone ever actually saying recruitment is easy on here. Everyone knows there are risks associated with any signing.

What I think is fair to say is that the more professional, diverse and expansive your recruitment network is, the more players a club will have on its radar and the more chance you have of mitigating recruitment risks.

So which clubs have recruiting networks that are more professional, diverse and expansive than ours and how have they performed over the last 6 transfer windows?

We keep getting told that ours is rubbish and other clubs are better but I've never seen any evidence of this.

Every other club has a better scouting network, buys better players, never buys a dud and is above us in the table...

...luckily we haven't got two whole divisions (and some!) with bigger grounds to compete against as well

some examples of some other recent high profile failures:

roque mesa signed from las palmas for 11m by swansea

ahmed musa signed from cska moscow for 16m by leicester

gianelli imbula signed from porto for 18.2m by stoke

lots of total flops out there and big money wasted by our pl rivals

Pretty much every PL club and half the Championship too Norton. It doesn’t necessarily mean these other clubs are getting every recruitment decision right but they all have the capability of recruiting from a far larger pool than us.

We’ve made some bad signings but I totally agree we’ve made some excellent ones too. But you’d have to admit that most of our excellent signings have been as a result of players already well known to Eddie rather than the strength of our recruitment team.

If we are talking about the last 6 windows then Aké, Begovic and King have been great successes. Ibe and Cook are showing signs of getting to that level. How big a part did the recruitment team play in these signings? I don’t expect us to find the next Mahrez, Coutinho, Payet, Kanté, Gueyye etc, but there is an entire pool of players out there which we simply never consider and it will limit our progression.

And yes we did beat Chelsea 3-0. It’s because we currently have a great manager and good players.

This is a fun game!

Davy Klasseen (Ajax to Everton): £23.6 million

Saido Berahino (West Brom to Stoke): £15 million

Danny Drinkwater (Leicester to Chelsea): £36 million

Tiemoue Bakayoko (Monaco to Chelsea): £40 million

I am very happy we haven't spent tens of millions on average players in a totally over inflated January transfer window.

I am still slightly concerned with lack of cover at right back and central defence. A couple of injuries away from problems. Smithy being out now for a few games probably saves him a few bookings and means no further suspension this season - so no net loss !!

At least now the fixture list is not congested till the end of the season, no midweeks and a couple of international breaks gives us recovery time. I was very concerned that we could get decimated by injuries in that crazy December period.

Will be very pleased to get Defoe back and really hope Mings can get back.

This sums up my view. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the 'failed transfer policy' argument we have left ourselves short of cover at right back and it has been an issue for some time.

We have enough central midfielders but they are all susceptible to patchy form, even Lewis Cook so it's another area where we could come a cropper.

Benik has said today that Eddie didn't want him to go but that he let him go because he's a nice guy. Not sure that is a legit reason to let someone go.

Having said all of that our squad does look a lot more balanced with the current formation we are playing. Other than at CB/RB.

Basically we got 3 RBs. Smith, Franno and now Wee Man.
And 4 CBs. Franno, Cook, Ake and Simpson.

That should see us through til the next window.

Deck me did Bakayoko really cost £40 million? He was ordinary at best on Wednesday.

Yes because listing a few failures proves the point.....

Mahrez £400k
Kante £5m
Mane £10m
Van dijk £2.6m

You seem to have left them off your list.

All arrived into the country from professional scouting teams paid a fraction of what players earn.

A poor signing that people only justify by the fact we stayed up twice.

Staying up twice was a good thing If I recall.

Ample justification for his initial signing and his contribution.

You expect every signing to be a worldly.....which is laughable.

I don’t expect that at all. Just for us to try and sign the positions we need. Players are always a lottery.

Afobe never looked anything other than a decent championship striker at best...and at worst he was way too disinterested. Witness those two Wigan games?

I think it would be totally unfair, to put Afobe's time with us, down to the two games with Wigan.

He formed a good partnership with Josh King at the end of last season.

I think Kings imperious form carried him through a bit to be honest. Of course he was more than just Wigan but that represented the effort he put in for his last two appearances clearly having decided he was fed up. Not fair on those that spent hard earned....
