Howe: Hyndman deserved the opportunity

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe thought that Emerson Hyndman took his chance when given a rare appearance against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

The United States international, who was a summer 2016 signing from Championship club Fulham, enjoyed a brief loan spell in Scotland last season with Rangers.

Hyndman scored four times in 17 appearances and won the Young Player of the Year award.

But a stress fracture to his foot saw him return to Dean Court for treatment before the season ended.

In September 2017 he returned to fitness with the development squad and made his first appearance of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup playing the final four minutes as a late extra time substitute.

His appearance in the starting XI in the FA Cup, was his first start since he played against Celtic in April.

Howe told the Daily Echo...

'...It`s difficult when you look at the quality he has ahead of him. It was the same for Lewis Cook when he first came to the club.

"You have to wait, learn and develop behind the scenes. A lot of work has been done by Emerson and he has shown a great attitude to it.

"I thought he deserved the opportunity to show how much he has improved and I felt he delivered that.'

Hyndman was very poor first half but to his credit improved in the second and put in a good shift. As Wigan dropped deeper he started to dominate midfield. - Join the conversation here.
