Howe: I can`t work out how it`s not a penalty

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was dumbfounded with how referee Jon Moss failed to award a stonewall penalty against Southampton.

With the game evenly poised and still goalless, Adam Smith surged into the box, Southampton defender Sofiane Boufal lunged in and without touching the ball he took out Smith at speed.

The Cherries defender fell to the floor and without hesitation or apparent communication with his assistant he immediately awarded a free kick to Southampton for diving.

He then awarded yellow cards to both Adam Smith for the dive and Jermain Defoe.

To add salt to the wound, it also happens to be Adam Smith's fifth booking of the season and so will miss the next game through suspension.

Howe told

'I think it was a clear penalty, I really do.

'I had a good view, if the defender doesn`t get the ball he`s in danger, I can`t work out how it`s not a penalty. But that`s the game of football, we were hugely disappointed not to get a penalty but even more so lose Adam to suspension.

Can't the club appeal as the referee admitted he made the wrong decision?

Otherwise it becomes a farce how some appeal over decisions and get them overturned and others can't appeal.

It not only cost us another 2 points but we lose a player.
