Wilson: It's down to whenever the manager thinks I'm ready

Wilson: It's down to whenever the manager thinks I'm ready

AFC Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson was pleased with his return to action following an hours run out in the Premier League Cup.

Following his return, Wilson now believes he is in contention to return to the first team following the international window.

The Cherries top goalscorer during their Championship winning season has been plagued by knee injuries during the Cherries first three seasons in the Premier League.

The former England Under 21's international was being spoken about in the media as a possible striker set to be called up into the full England squad when he injured his right knee in a match against Stoke City in September 2015. That ruled him out for a little over six months.

He played six games towards the end of that season and then featured in 21 games last season, scoring 6 goals before he was ruled out for the remainder of that campaign with another ACL injury, after Wilson had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in training.

He underwent surgery in February.

Wilson recently returned to training with the first team and was selected as one of three over-age outfield players that were allowed to be played in the game against Norwich City last week.

After the game Wilson told afcb.co.uk...

'...It feels fine, it's not even in my mind. I know it's strong, I've done all my testing and everything says it's stronger than last time...'

'...This time round I feel a lot better, last time I think I rushed myself back a little bit . I took longer this time and I think I've benefited from that.

'I've been to see different people and Jonny King, the physio at the club, has really helped.

'Training's been good, I've been training with the squad and I feel sharp and good. I wanted to get a game and now I've ticked that box and played 65 minutes.

'Now it's whenever the manager thinks I'm ready and for for selection.'

Obviously it's early days but Callum looked great to me. Quick, strong, neat flicks and turns, chasing lost causes - and winning the ball. A great reminder of what he can add to our squad when he gets back to full fitness. He's obviously going to be a bit rusty but I don't see why he can't make the bench for the Boro game. - Join the conversation here.
