Surman: I've never ruled out playing for South Africa

AFC Bournemouth midfielder Andrew Surman insists that he has not ruled out playing international football for South Africa in the future.

In 2007 Surman made his debut for England Under 21's and went on to make four appearances, but in 2012 he was approached to play for South Africa, however he turned down the chance to play for the country of his birth.

He was again approached ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, but Surman once again politely declined the invitation.

Since his move to the south coast he has not been approached again and although Surman insists he remains committed to his club football, he has not closed the door on the possibility of playing for South Africa at the age of 30.

Surman told the Daily Echo...

'I have never ruled out playing for South Africa but my priority has always been my club football. The past two or three years have been hugely important for me.

'If I had gone to play international football things might not have worked out the same way.

'I was really honoured to be called up and it certainly was not something I turned up my nose at. I really, seriously, considered it.

'But I have a young family and international football is a big commitment...'

I'd like us to be able to rotate our deeper midfielder between an actual defender, a proper shield for the defence, AND the more skillful Surman or Hyndman types who recycle the ball quickly and help build possession and attacks.

Only the absolute best midfielders in the world can do both, and will be out of our price range. But both skillsets are useful and important to have IMHO. So having one or two of each and mixing them up depending on the opposition and game plan makes sense.

I like the job that Surman does, I only don't like the fact that he's seen as the first name on the team sheet and indispensable regardless of the opposition or game situation. Some games suit Surman and some really don't.

He must be a good experienced head to have around the club though, and we aren't a squad exactly full of experience. So if he'd be happy with a slightly more rotational role here (and I doubt he'd start every week for any other PL club) I'd renew him tomorrow under those terms. If he is still starting every week next season then I think we've missed another trick.
