Cook: Defoe is a hugely exciting signing

AFC Bournemouth defender Steve Cook has spoken of his excitement about the summer signing of England international Jermain Defoe.

Defoe has re-joined the Cherries 17 years after he first joined the club on loan.

His return comes via a free transfer after he was allowed to trigger a release clause in his contract following Sunderland's relegation from the Premier League.

During the 16 years he has been away from the south coast he has scored over 250 goals for both club and country, proving himself as one of England's most natural finishers in his generation.

Sky Sports have reported that Defoe is set to earn £65,000-a-week over the course of his three year deal.

Cook told the Daily Echo...

'It is a hugely exciting signing for us. Every time we have come up against Jermain, he has been so sharp.

'The number of goals he has scored over his career has been incredible, he is an outstanding striker...'

'...Last time he was here he was setting records and, hopefully, he can do that for us again. He will give us another fantastic option.

'He is one of the toughest strikers I have played against...'

Sky report on when he was last here and what has happened in between.

The players who were in the team on his debut are part of the backroom staff and includes Eddie and Jason.

And Howe will not be the only familiar face for Defoe, as Carl Fletcher, Steve Fletcher, Richard Hughes, Stephen Purches, Gareth Stewart and Jason Tindall - who all started in his debut game - are part of Howe's current backroom staff.

Mentions the average attendance then and what we get now.
