Wilshere fears England axe

Wilshere fears England axe

Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere fears he will be axed from the England squad and promises to fight hard to earn his place back within AFC Bournemouth's squad.

Wilshere made the move from Arsenal on loan to the south coast on transfer deadline day in August, he has always sighted his desire to represent his country as one of the reasons why he was desperate for regular first team football.

With the Cherries he has gone on to make 22 appearances, including 19 starts, overall he has played 1644 minutes of football, a combined total that surpasses his total in recent seasons.

But he was left on the bench for the trip to Old Trafford, where the Cherries picked up a valuable point against Manchester United, despite being down to 10 men for the entire second half.

Wilshere was once again on the bench against West Ham United, with the Cherries going on to win 3-2 in the last minute.

Wilshere dropping out of the Cherries first choice XI comes just before Gareth Southgate is set to announce his latest England squad.

Wilshere told the Daily Echo...

'Of course I want to be in it. That`s why I came to Bournemouth.

'I have missed out on a few squads, I know what that feels like and I don`t want to be in that position again.

'I will keep working hard. The only thing you can do as a player, whoever you are, is work hard on the pitch for your club, week in, week out.

'Then it is up to the England manager to decide whether to pick you.'

I think there's pros and cons to having Wilshere in the side. Obviously he's a quality player, technically nobody else in our side can match him.

However I believe his presence sometimes offers our other players an easy get-out, and in our poorer and lower confidence patches this season we've spent games just passing to Jack and expecting him to do something magical. Yet we're at our best moving the ball with fairly simple passes, yet quickly and in coordination. Not playing Wilshere possibly forces other players to step up, and enforces the importance of collectively building tempo in our play to unlock a defence, as opposed to one killer pass that Wilshere could produce doing it.

Good problem to have though. Be it as a number 10 with an engine room behind him, or as a sub we can bring on in the second half to pick out all the holes in a stretched game - he'll have plenty more to contribute for us yet this season.
