Elphick: I want to make up Howe's mind

AFC Bournemouth captain Tommy Elphick is aiming to earn a new contract with the Cherries this season.

Elphick has entered the final 12 months of his current contract and is keen to earn a new deal as soon as possible.

After struggling for early season form last term, Elphick dropped out of the side after leading the club to promotion from League One.

Elphick lost his place to then new signing Elliott Ward who partnered Steve Cook during the opening months of the season.

By December, Elphick had made six Championship starts (four further appearances from the bench), missing almost half of the league games.

He eventually played himself into form and into the team displacing Ward from the first choice defensive set-up.

This season Ward is still recovering from a knee operation in April, making Cook and Elphick first choice selections for the centre back positions.

However Howe has spoken highly of youth team graduate Baily Cargill, whilst the likes of Simon Francis and Ian Harte can also fill in at centre back from the more natural full back roles.

So Elphick is looking to impress early and both secure his place in the side and his immediate future at the club.

Elphick told the Daily Echo...

"For me, coming into the last year of my contract, I want to make up the gaffer`s mind for him and do that pretty early.

"You look across the country and there are not many clubs with a forward-thinking management team like ours and an owner who is prepared to back us.

"We are a very fortunate bunch of players and, of course, I want to continue to be a part of that. This is a genuinely progressive club and one of the very few in the country that can honestly say that...'
