Northampton & Torquay make Hargreaves approach

League Two sides Northampton Town and Torquay United have made official approaches for AFC Bournemouth first team coach Chris Hargreaves.

Both sides are without a manager after Adie Boothroyd was sacked last month by Northampton and Alan Knill left Torquay earlier this week.

Hargreaves was a popular midfielder during his playing days and made almost 700 appearances in the lower leagues, most notably at Northampton, Torquay and Oxford.

During his days at Torquay he captained the side to Conference play-off glory and the following year he was part of Oxford's promotion winning campaign back into the football league.

Since retiring from professional football the 40 year old joined the youth set-up at Exeter City and headed up the Cherries new development squad.

AFC Bournemouth announced Chris Hargreaves as the Cherries new development coach on 10th July 2012 and in July 2013 he was promoted to first team coach to work alongside AFC Bournemouth management duo Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall, whilst also aiding new development coach Stephen Purches.

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told the Daily Echo...

"We were approached by both Northampton and Torquay for permission to speak to Chris, which we reluctantly agreed to. We don`t want to stand in the way of somebody progressing their career, if that is the path he wants to take.

'But, at the same time, he is a valued member of my staff and we wouldn`t want to lose him. We have left the ball very much in Chris`s court to make the decision that he wants for him and his family. It is rare you have a chance to take two jobs so we will wait to see what happens.

"I think he wants the chance to manage in his own right and I don`t think you can stop anybody with that wish. If he were to go, he would go with our best wishes."
