Mitchell: We might do something every year

AFC Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell has said the success of the Real Madrid exhibition friendly might be the start of an annual event.

The Cherries hosted the nine time European champions at Dean Court on Sunday, within three weeks of announcing the fixture, the Cherries not only managed to sell out the stadium, but also completed the erection of the new temporary south stand and completed work on the new club store ahead of the game.

Almost 12,000 attended the match, a new record attendance at the new Dean Court which also brought in bumper club shop sales with over 30,000 being taken on its first day.

Whilst Mitchell has yet to confirm how much it cost to bring Real Madrid to the south coast, he has denied speculation that it cost around 1million.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo...

"There are still a few more things to come in, such as the monies from the sales of the television rights, but the first indication is that we are close to breaking even.

"Everything was very well managed and the day was a huge success for the club. If we can put on an event of that magnitude and break even then it gives us scope to do things like this every year.

"I realise you can`t get much bigger than Real Madrid but there are other big clubs out there who people would like to see."

Barcelona next and then Bayern Munich. I'm sure the Irish guy, Eamon McLoughlin, who recommended us, has been impressed.
