Connell: Fletch is Bournemouth through and through

Former AFC Bournemouth forward and current Bradford striker Alan Connell has played tribute to former team-mate Steve Fletcher.

40 year old Cherries legend Steve Fletcher announced his retirement on Friday, ending a 20 year association with the club as a player.

During that time Fletch amassed 728 games for the club, an all time appearance record that Connell, who played alongside Fletch during two separate spells for the club believes will never be beaten.

Fletch's career highlights include a Wembley appearance in the Autowindscreens Shield Final in 1998. Scoring and winning promotion in the Division Three Play-Off Final at the Millennium Stadium in 2003. Scoring the goal to secure the clubs Football League status following a seventeen point penalty in 2009, playing in 45 out of 46 games the follow season as promotion was secured despite a 16 month transfer embargo and making his final appearance one week after the club secured promotion to the second tier of English Football for only the second time in the clubs history.

Connell told the Daily Echo...

"I would be very surprised because 728 is a massive number and I can`t see it ever being beaten.

"I know that Fletch had the chance to move on a long time ago and he decided not to. He loves the club and the area, which is why he is happily settled down there. He is Bournemouth through and through."

"As a striker gambling on his flick-ons, you knew that nine times out of 10 he would win them. He was a joy to play alongside and I am sure all the other strikers he played with would say the same...'
