Sheringham: Nice to pull on the shirt again

AFC Bournemouth striker Charlie Sheringham was pleased to make his first steps towards full fitness this week.

The Cherries striker sustained a foot injury scoring against Brentford on Boxing Day 2011. The initial x-ray was unclear but a later MRI scan revealed a fracture to the navicular.

In January 2012 he had an operation to insert two screws in to fix the bone and he spent three months in a protective boot, in May he had hoped that his recovery was on course for him to return to full training during pre-season, however when he stopped wearing the protective air boot he began to feel discomfort in one of his toes during light jogging.

To give the toe time to settle, Sheringham eased off on impact work and just continued light exercises. However whilst the problem with his toe then cleared, he then started experiencing discomfort in his heel and while the use of a specialised anti-gravity treadmill, helped with his rehab, in July he was set to go and have a biomechanical assessment review regarding his heel and he continued his rehabilitation programme with physio Steve Hard and received intensive treatment at the Football Association's recently opened new headquarters at St George`s Park.

Sheringham underwent a further operation to attempt to cure his foot injury in November and made his long awaited return after he was named in an AFC Bournemouth XI that played against AFC Totton on Tuesday night and played the first half of the Hampshire Senior Cup tie.

The Cherries progressed through to the final following a penalty shoot-out victory and more good news followed as Sheringham came through the match without pain.

Sheringham told the Daily Echo...

"Having not played for 14 months, it was nice to be out there and nice to pull on the shirt and boots again. It was just a case of getting minutes under my belt. I ran around for 45 minutes and got a nice sweat on.

"It was just a case of getting minutes in the bank and progressing to next week. The main thing was that my foot didn`t hurt either during the game or afterwards. I am fit and it is now just a case of getting my match fitness."
