Howe: Ritchie has come through with flying colours

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has praised winger Matt Ritchie for his recent performances as a stand-in left-back.

Ritchie made the move to Dean Court in January from promotion rivals Swindon Town for around £500,000.

Ritchie had become one of the most exciting right wingers in the division, but since making the move to the south coast he has shown his versatility as a stand-in left-back.

Following the injury to Tommy Elphick at stadium:MK, Ritchie made his debut at left-back and has played the majority of his time in the role.

He briefly returned to his favoured position of right wing following the loan signing of Marcos Painter, but with the Brighton defender lacking match sharpness, Howe has opted to stick with Ritchie in defence.

Howe told the Daily Echo...

'...it is not his preferred position and it is not the position we see him playing long term.

"But what you have to do is always think of the team and what is best for the team at the moment is for Matt to play there.

"There are different challenges facing him. He has got to be able to defend and Matt, so far, has come through all those tests with flying colours.

It's so very rare to see us field our best team possible. I'm a bit p'ssed off that we after all the effort in signing him. We can't play him on right but guess that's how things go for us... again.

...Matt looks a class above at this level...we could do with a few more like his ability I reckon, he just seems to be thinking quicker than some of the guys around him at times too.
