Howe: We huffed and we puffed

AFC Bournemouth lost for the second successive game on Saturday as the visitors Sheffield United took the points and top spot in League One.

In scrappy game with neither side creating many chances, the difference game following an individual error from on loan defender Marcos Painter, who lost his man on the edge of the box, which allowed Jamie Murphy to steal in and score.

Other than former Celtic midfielder Barry Robson hitting the bar, Sheffield United offered little in the form of an attacking threat throughout the game, opting instead to be well drilled and organised, defending in numbers and forcing the Cherries to break them down.

For all of AFC Bournemouth's possession, the home side failed to make any real openings, not helped by a poor Dean Court pitch.

The defeat drops the Cherries down to sixth in the League One table.

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent after the game...

'We huffed and we puffed and we kept the ball really well but we never hurt them enough and never asked enough questions.

'Our match winners didn't perform and I think we need our flair players to dig us out of a hole sometimes and there was nothing in the game in terms of chances for them.

'We knew we were in a really difficult spell of games. We are always disappointed to lose and that's consecutive defeats which will hurt everybody badly but we really need to bounce back on Tuesday.'

I think this reporter was at a different game to the rest of us. More like confused and befuddled summed up the Cherries performance. The Blades were light years ahead tactically, never looked like conceding on a perfectly playable pitch. When you resort to blaming the pitch, things are getting really bad.

PS Possession only counts if you have it in the right areas of the pitch. Bournemouth passed the ball sideways and back from the centre of the pitch, Uniteds defence were perfectly happy with that, how often did Cherries git into Uniteds 18yd box?

^ We're aware where we went wrong & where Sheffield were right. We watch our team every week & can't say I didn't seeing this defeat coming. Sheffield won the game plane & simple but I trust regardless of some strange things he does & the fact that where he leaves us is always a place. Eddie Howes Barmy Army!

Someone had to hire a plane to watch Bournemouth yesterday; tickets are so hard to come by. Glad I don’t have to watch Sheffield every week. Fans want to be entertained by free flowing attacking football (although winning helps). Eddie and his team tried to give us that but Sheffield came with a blatant scheme to stop it (they call it game management). The obvious part was to knock the wind out of our players at every opportunity. Brett Pitman should be suing Collin‘s insurance company for whiplash today. The other more distasteful part was to disrupt and provoke at every opportunity. The ref, who probably hasn’t just come back from a free holiday to Singapore, let them get away with it. I know we were spoilt with the quality of the Daniels/Pugh partnership but if we are going to be promoted then Pugh must take Painter under his wing and work on partnership drills; or one of our strengths will turn into a major weakness. One thing to work on: When a team try to disrupt the flow of our game by exaggerating injury and provoking arguments all over the pitch don’t get sucked in. Seize the initiative back. Try using a huddle to talk about how well we are playing and how to keep it going.
