Appleton: Thomas recall might sour relationship

Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton has revealed his disappointment in AFC Bournemouth's decision to recall Wesley Thomas from his loan spell.

The 25 year old joined Pompey on an emergency 30 day loan at the end of September after struggling for goals with the Cherries.

Last season, playing as a lone striker under former manager Lee Bradbury, Thomas scored six goals in his first six appearances away from home, scoring eleven goals in total during his first season in League One following his move from Crawley.

But he hadn't found the net since scoring in Paul Groves first game in charge of the Cherries away to Stevenage in March and in fact, that was his only goal in his last 22 appearances for AFC Bournemouth.

But it didn't take him long to rediscover his scoring form following his move along the coast with Thomas scoring on his Pompey debut against Scunthorpe on 29th September.

He went on to score his second of the season against Crewe and scored his third of the season last Saturday against Shrewsbury.

Appleton was hoping to extend Thomas' loan into a second month, but following Paul Groves sacking as manager and Eddie Howe's return to Dean Court, Howe has decided to recall Thomas and he will now return to the club on Monday for training.

With Portsmouth's game away to Sheffield United being moved to Monday evening for Sky Television coverage, Thomas has now played his final game for Pompey.

Appleton told the Chichester Observer...

'...I`m a little bit disappointed with the way Bournemouth handled it...'

'...who knows if this will sour the relationship we have with Bournemouth in the future?`

'...I just hope for his sake he gets utilised at Bournemouth, otherwise there might be a bit of sour grapes...'

Easy on Appleton he is our player after all. Portsmouth are becoming a threat in this league so shouldn't be too hard to understand. It's your problem if their becomes a sour relationship in the end.

Sorry Appy, but he is an AFCB player. He did well with you but we want him back now and, under the current management, he has a good future here. Good luck, but you are our opposition. Why should you have our players ?

Mr. Appleton, be grateful you have a team to manage. You have great supporters but your club is financially ruined at present. You are a good, well respected manager, and if it all goes belly up at Portsmouth you won't have a problem finding another team to manage. So don't come the 'hard done by' story, count your blessings and good fortune.

Can anyone explain to me how Pompey can sign a whole team on "emergency loans" while being in administration when we were not allowed to sign a single player during our time in the same boat? Seems to me it makes a mockery of the penalties applied for getting into the financial troubles that they have!!
