Cherries hit Winchester for six

AFC Bournemouth breezed past Winchester City in Tuesday nights Hampshire Senior Cup tie.

After assisting former caretaker manager Dennis Rofe with first team duties, Chris Hargreaves returned to his regular role as Cherries development squad manager and his side defeated Southern League Division One South & West side Winchester City 6-0 at Dean Court.

First team members Shwan Jalal, Stephane Zubar and Donal McDermott were added to the side replacing regular development squad players Benjamin Büchel, Dan Strugnell and Aristede Bassele.

Regular members Case, Meades, Bowles, Wakefield, Carmichael, Makoni, Chiedozie and Gilkes made up the remainder of the side.

Donal McDermott was the stand out performer of the first half scoring two excellent goals to put the Cherries ahead at half time. The visitors threatened to get back into the game during the second half, with one effort hitting the post.

But once Clive Makoni and Jordan Chiedozie both scored two goals each during the final half an hour, the Cherries dominated and put in a performance that pleased Hargreaves, especially as the squad had been struggling with stomach bugs.

Hargreaves told afcb.co.uk...

"Our passing and movement was really good, You can`t really pick out individuals because it`s a team game and we played well as a team...'

'...We are through to the next round and we are taking this competition seriously and that showed with the performance. The further we can go, the higher profile the competition takes and the higher profile the players will get. Getting through can only be a good thing, so let`s see now how far we can get."

"A lot of players out there were suffering, I know I was. I almost went to the fourth official to make a substitution for me and to bring a new coach on! The two Josh`s came off at half-time with gastroenteritis and there were several of the players struggling from that. People have gone to war with stomach aches though, so a game of football is not too bad."

Mcdermott on form looks a championship player but we havn't seen that form since he left to Huddersfield. Again aha I'm going to mention how Howe could probely bring the best out of Mcdermott.

"People have gone to war with stomach aches though, so a game of football is not too bad" - That's the kind of fighting talk and spirit that needs to be in the 1st team squad!
