Fletch inspired by Green Goals project

Steve Fletcher visited the New Leaf Community Allotment, a community project funded by environmental initiative Green Goals.

Fletch saw how the money that was granted to the scheme is being put to fantastic use as he toured the site and witnessed the incredible amount of work that has gone in.

It was a genuinely inspiring visit which moved the club record appearance holder to say, "It is great to see how the project is enhancing the community and inspiring people from all walks of life. I could see how much it meant to them and that it is a huge and meaningful part of their lives.

"I hope to visit again in the future because what they have is something special and it is an inspiration to others."

The New Leaf Community Allotment, which is situated in Throop, is a true testament to the people who have worked there.

It has been transformed from a wasteland to a working allotment with vegetable and fruit plots, polytunnels and an apple orchard, and is also looking to produce its own honey from a number of hives on the site.

New Leaf provides educational opportunities to individuals and groups, volunteering opportunities for all, as well as affordable local produce.

The most striking thing about the project though is not the produce, but the investment in people from the local community.

The 1.2 acre New Leaf Community Allotment in Throop, Bournemouth, was established by BCHA, the housing and social care support provider. The site gives everyone an opportunity to learn and volunteer together in a healthy horticultural setting.

Whether it be to restore the 30 tree apple orchard or work in the polytunnels and on the fruit plots, New Leaf is open to all to come, learn and have some fun. The range of volunteers include individuals who have recently retired, family groups, adults with learning difficulties, school children and many more!

The Green Goals funding has helped New Leaf to put new tools in the hands of their eager team and has seen the site grow as much as the vegetables that have been planted!

Geoff, one of the volunteers involved, sums up the influence the site has had 'Since popping down to see what things were about at New Leaf, I have been there most week days. I am more than happy to give my time to something like this, where those involved are really trying to make a difference to the community and local families.'

Richie, who has led the orchard restoration, adds 'New Leaf has been fantastic for me. I feel more confident and have made some great friends. New Leaf really has changed my life!'
