Abbott: It's news to me

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott has said that he was completely unaware of the speculation linking him with the vacant managerial position at Dean Court.

The Daily Echo reported last Thursday that the Cherries may have 'turned their attentions' to Abbott, who initially joined Carlisle as assistant manager to Neil McDonald in July 2006. When McDonald was sacked thirteen months later, Abbott took over as caretaker manager and after impressing with five wins from ten games he was overlooked for the job on a permanent basis.

He continued for the next thirteen months as assistant to John Ward, but when he left in November 2008 Abbott was handed the job on a permanent basis.

Since then he has won the Football League Trophy in 2011 and finished in the top half of League One during the last two seasons.

When asked about the speculation Abbott told the News & Star...

"That`s news to me - you`re telling me something that hadn`t even entered my head, At least it maybe means people are taking notice of what we are doing as a club, not me as an individual.

"Maybe that tells us that at Carlisle we are doing things right.

"But I absolutely didn`t know anything about it and I have just enjoyed a very good weekend."

Would he really be the right man for the job? Maybe at the beginning of the season but not now in the state we are in.
