Rofe: First goal was crucial

AFC Bournemouth first team coach Dennis Rofe took temporary control of the Cherries first team squad for the first time against Coventry City on Saturday afternoon.

His first team selection saw the return of Shaun MacDonald and Marc Pugh to the Cherries midfield and the surprise return of Simon Francis at right back.

Lewis Grabban replaced Frank Demouge, but primarily adopted a wider role, with Lee Barnard playing mainly up front on his own.

AFC Bournemouth were the better of the two teams during the first half, but failed to find a breakthrough despite enjoying a good purple patch around the half hour mark and the teams went in level at half time.

The second half was all Coventry's and once they had opened the scoring through former AFC Bournemouth loanee David McGoldrick, the away side hardly threatened to get back into the game with the only exception being Shaun MacDonald's long range effort.

The defeat, the Cherries fourth in succession, leaves AFC Bournemouth 21st in the League One table.

Rofe told the Daily Echo...

"I changed the formation and wanted to freshen up the boys. We had a game plan which, until half-time, had been working quite well.

"But there are fine margins between winning and losing. We had a few chances, which we didn`t take, and so did they. The game was evenly balanced at half-time but, unfortunately, we conceded a goal and it was possibly poor defending.

"I always thought this would be a tight game between two teams that, for various reasons, are probably at the wrong end of the league. The first goal was always going to be crucial and even more so today...'

Ah well how can you expect a win in these circumstances. Players are lacking confidence, players are just coming back from injurey & manager just been sacked. It has to be one of the worst possible starts a club in our posisition could have. Well no point dwelling on it, let's just focus on the game ahead & eagely await our saviour.

i heard josh carmichael was taken off because he took a knock on the knee that he injured last year but is ok i am glad because he works hard and has talent and i think considering he has only played80 mins in youth games then played a part in the last 3 games he must havbe been tired but for e when he is on the pitch he makes things happen

What can you say? Early doors so big no comment on this game. The boys start from here surely personal pride wanting to achieve success for the fans means a win next time? But like all season where do the goals come from? who will be the leader? who wants to perform for their club and badge enough?. Come the new year we will see who is going out the doors at Dean Court! Can we afford anyone to manage these boys and turn them into men? Come on EM make it quick and count this time! No pressure like!

Overpaid players still underachieve, no change after sacking the manager. Time to start shipping out the talented players who only perform in training.

The only important issue to stem from this result is the need to appoint a new Manager sooner rather than later. That would re-focus te squad, maybe a few changes needed but not wholesale.

Rofe is wrong, the first goal should not have been crucial. Coventry were astonishingly poor, so we should have been able to win the game even after going one down. The fact that we only had one shot on target is what was crucial....

It looked like Groves was still in charge yesterday, same system, same weak, innefective, players. Where are the men wh will fight for AFCB we need Zubar, Cook and Moseley in the team and we need to play 442 and attack from the start with plenty of effort and movement.

Oh Dennis, do you really believe this rubbish you are spouting. We were weak, negative, disjointed, lacking in belief, it was litle change from before. Coventry were there for the taking and we did not look interested. You should have shown some grit and dropped Addison, appointed a real captain, and had a go at them But no we capitulated without a real fight.

You know if it was me in charge, we wouldn't be training on Monday. It's not going to help in this situation. I'd be planning a karting & paintballing session with everyone to take a step away from the football and get the players bonded. That and good steam up in the afternoon with a meal could work wonders for morale. This team are so shot on confidence, they all look clueless as to what they're meant to be doing etc that it's no wonder we're losing all the time. I do blame Groves for that. We need to go back to 4-4-2 for a few games. Keep it simple and pick up a win or two. Anything fancy can come in a few games once we remember the BASICS.

Once we get a new manager he can then fix a formarion in & style in & find the best players for the fit & then our club can work from there as a base line but untill a new manager arrives don't expect much. Rofe isn't a manager but he will have to do what he can in the meen time so lay off the bloke.

I went to a top youth game today in Aberdeen one team was jubilent the other dejected.......the score was 19 nil keep the faith we have time to still make the play offs! WE DO NEED GUTS FROM THE TEAM THOUGH. Natural leaders are scarce anywhere in sport so just stay cool and who knows we might yet get the team and Captain and Manager we deserve....
