Mitchell: James arrival a big boost

AFC Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell has revealed that the Cherries have agreed personal terms with former England international 'keeper David James.

The former Liverpool, Man City and Portsmouth 'keeper joined the AFC Bournemouth squad for training on Thursday and has agreed an initial one year deal to continue his career at Dean Court.

The 42 year old is a free agent after being released by Bristol City at the end of last season and had previously been training with League Two side Exeter City to remain fit.

If the deal is completed in time James could be included in the Cherries squad for the Walsall game, with Darryl Flahavan likely to miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo...

"His arrival will give everybody a big boost. He is a good character and a great person to have in the squad and the changing room so we can`t go wrong. We think very highly of Shwan (Jalal) but this is going to spur him on."

"He (James) is not too keen to start (against Walsall) because he feels he would have liked a few more days to get back into it. But he will definitely be either on the bench or playing and, all being well, will be available to start on Tuesday (against Crawley)."

As James said "He (James) is not too keen to start (against Walsall) because he feels he would have liked a few more days to get back into it. "..........ANOTHER player who will need time! By the end of the season most of the players will have "got into it" but perhaps too late..........Playing James from the start would be a gimmick and probably result in an early goal, so hopefully Groves will be sensible and bring him on later when we are at least 5-0 up.

A good signing I think

At least he is a decent experienced keeper that commands his area. He has laways seemed to keep himself fit so he should do ok for us at least for this season. We also need a better centre half pairing than that currently used, personally I think Addison is a liability

I dont know - he did very little for Bristol City and I think Jalal is a good keeper who's had a bad (but not appaling) start. Keepers are all about confidence and this is bound to dent Jalal's confidence further. Although I'd concede that he has brought it on himself. But when James has gone.....what happens then. I was just hoping they'd let Jalal play and turn the corner himself. Will be interesting to see how this one works out, its great that little old bournemouth have the kind of gravitas that David James is interested to come here

If I was in goal with Addison stood in front of me, I would want to run out for every ball that came near my box.

^ I think the ariel side of Addisons game is one of the things he's best at.

^ I'm sorry, but I have lost count of the amount of completely unchallanged, all the time in the world, free-headers I have seen us gift opposing teams - So im going to have to compeltely dissagree with you there.

Jalal appalling - If two howlers that resulted in oppostion goals, poor efforts on a least 4 other goals conceded and not near any penalties out of 11 attempts is not appalling, I am at a loss to know what is. If James is sub lets hope he comes on at half time because Jalal will probably have cost us a goal by then.

Not a massive signing, but a great signing in theory massive boost to the players and great to have around the club, yes he is nicknamed calamity for a reason he has made mistakes but we play in league one and I am sure he can do a job. I reckon sign Heskey now.....

Um Chris what about Elphick? People skip through him a number times with little effort & plus his ariel abillity tinks from what I've seen.
