Groves: We should have been more progressive

AFC Bournemouth manager Paul Groves admitted that his side found it difficult to break down a stubborn Hartlepool side.

Hartlepool United coach Neale Cooper said prior to the game that his side didn't have to 'entertain' Bournemouth and there was no concerns there with his side quite crudely putting eleven men behind the ball for the majority of the game on Saturday.

The Cherries dominated possession, but lacked the quality or the tempo to break down a hard working defensive set up from the visitors.

It had looked like the away side would steal the points following a late penalty, but substitute Matt Tubbs rescued a point for the Cherries with a 93rd minute equaliser.

Groves told afcb.co.uk...

"...of course we wanted to play better, but we had to be patient against opposition who got behind the ball, We have a lot of new players in the squad, it`s a young team without a great deal of experience in terms of games played. We should have played quicker, we should have been more progressive, but sometimes it`s difficult to play through teams.

"Part and parcel of playing at home is that teams will come here and park the bus, get behind the ball and make it difficult. We face that for a reason - because they have seen us play.

"We were better in the second half and continued to be in control with a better tempo. When you control games and control the opposition, you have to accept at times that teams will come and stay behind the ball. You have to break them down and you have to be patient...'

Atleast Groves is talking some sence unlike Bradderz. We do have to be progressive and far far quicker. I think Hughes not being around did show much he means to us.

This comment is based on what i've seen from comments on the echo website as i wasn't at the game. We struggled to break them down because we were playing a narrow diamond formation against a team with 5 midfielders. Also playing a right footed player at left wingback caused us problems as he couldn't do anything like getting to the byline because he wouldn't be able to cross the ball. we only started looking lively when we brought Pugh and Daniels on which gave us a bit of width presumably down this left side.... This guy(PG) must be the most clueless T***** on earth.

Please read this Mr G and now give Tubbs a fair run in the team and let's see what he is capable of

The way we play under Groves -very slow build up play from the back and midfield plays into the hands of tea ms who come here to defend. Loads of time to get everybody behind the ball and doubly mark our front men and preventing any telling passes forward or through. In addition it is very boring!

Mr G please come into the North stand and you will observe just where things are not working, and if you can not see them the seasoned supporter can soon tell you,we are not all of our heads up there!

....the football you are serving up PG is regressive and stagnant....and sonn only 4k will be at DC suffering it...

There you go PG. Your tactics are the problem not the players. They play with fear and will not attempt balls in to space for the likes of Grabban and McQuoid to run on to. You had to speed it up in the second half and we did look better. Remove the shackles a bit when we come up against another team who doesn't want to play. The first half was boring, predictable and ineffective - that's your fault, not the players. Get a grip!
