Groves: Didn`t see that coming

AFC Bournemouth manager Paul Groves was surprised by his teams defensive frailties on Saturday after watching his side concede five against Sheffield United.

After initially taking the lead via a goal from Tommy Elphick on twenty minutes, the Cherries conceded just four minutes later and eventually went back to the dressing room 3-1 down at half time.

A Lee Barnard goal just three minutes after the break brought the score back to 3-2, but Richard Cresswell, who had only been on the pitch four minutes restored Sheffield United's two goal cushion on the hour mark.

Marc Pugh made it 4-2 with three minutes to go, but a late penalty in stoppage time sent the Cherries home with a 5-3 defeat.

The defeat extends the Cherries record this season to five games without a victory, with AFC Bournemouth manager Paul Groves record reading 2 wins from 13 league and cup games.

Groves told afcb.co.uk...

"We didn`t see that coming, it came out of the blue. We have not conceded many chances in games and this was not like what has gone on before.

"We got ourselves in front and they then made the game more physical and direct and we had no answer to that which is disappointing. We gifted them a two goal lead by half time, and you cannot do that at a place like Sheffield United.

"We now need to look at the goals we conceded and how they came about. We need to look at the period after we went in front and then allowed them to take over and find out why...'

PG "We didn`t see that coming, it came out of the blue." ...hmmmmm. Diamond formation error first half and poor defensive qualities. Unfortunately many of us DID see this coming, so maybe PG was looking the wrong way or perhaps trying to fix the team bus rather than managing his team in this match. Portsmouth match irrelevant, so both teams may try and lose to focus on league ....Olympic badminton re-run? With Yeovil and Hayter not far away, let's hope James H. does not want to beat his hatrick record set in 2004. The clouds are looking darker.

We need to look!!! to late, we have no muscle in midfield.Keep on with playing sideways an backwards u fool.Obviously works.

Another quote from the 'Lee Bradbury book of quotations'!

I am sorry Mr G but enough is enough, you have had tonnes of money to spend and have not managed to get a team together that can gel on the pitch, we are just above the relegation zone with only 3 points from a possible 12, you need to hold your hands up and admit that the job is too big for you and step aside so we can get a proven manager in before its too late!!
TheGolferUK
Just an observation, half the team is new and hasn't played together long, it will take time for them to gel and know each others movements. Also the kart manager we had with experience was Jimmy Quinn. I agree we haven't logged great, but there have been periods in games where we've looked good, we should at least give him a chance rather than be another club that changes the manager every 5 mins

How we remember the golden days under Bradbury, six league games without conceding a goal. These games based around a defensive core of Flahavan, Cook and Zubar all of whom have been replaced by inferior players. All that money to spend and yet certain parts of the team weakened.

Just looking at the current site poll opposite this story, asking what position should we improve in the summer. I think Manager should have been an option on that list. This one is spoilt for choice and couldn't make a tactical decision if his life depended on it...

YOU ARE A WASTE OF SPACE!!! Why on earth they ever gave you the job, it's a total mystery - you have THE WORST RECORD in the FA with 20% win ratio. You failed consistantly at Grimbsy and now you are leading our beloved cherries on the relegation road with the injured players you keep bringing in and terrible tactics. Please take a moment to think about what you are doing, write yourself a resignation letter and let us get a manager that has a clue about running a team.
Casperelli
Yes on the injured players, are we aiming to compete in paralympics?

I think he should go and thought he should never have been appointed in the first place. Though I think we should be careful what we wish for as EM likes appointing within, and will just replace one clown for another.

You didn't see it coming..... we did !!!!

Hi Guys If you look up my past inputs you will see that this is unusual for me.....compassion that is!! Look we all are very clever we all hoped for the best Groves is a yes man yes another one! Then bingo we got a hec of a cash input that well came out of the blue. Sadly the cash should have been conditional with a change of Coach and others! We all realised that they would act like kids in a sweet shop with maybe one or three strange deals (Frank Demouge wait a minute he is injured and has the prospect of an operation now!! Hey he was NOT on our staff now he is so who the hec pays for all of this ineptitude) The staff have not bought quality only crocks! This is odd and not good business(Don't compare this all with the Premiership buying injured etc) We dont have anyone bossing the boys on the pitch so we are leaderless and for the moment pants! Lets all pray! I don't wanna go down with the Luton TownI wanna see the best and E.M. is the problem not his cronies! I think guys we might have spent our fortune on the wrong cookies!!
St Albans cherry
Rant over! Now maybe we can get a few results by NOT tinkering getting the team Captain to shout and scream and the fans maybe might get the results we all deserve. The team of young boys they have to believe in all of this not us and all that guff!. YOU Guys should realise that it is a fantastic opportunity to be playing in front of such educated and passionate fans. Now as I keep saying if you are reading this GET OUT EARLY shake a few hands SMILE and ENJOY and keep the red flag flying high!! Bloody E.M. et al play in spite of them you are n the luckiest job in the world!!

Did all those who saw this coming have money on it? I would not have predicted such incompetent defence as gthat had not been our weakness recently, nor would I have predicted scoring three away goals in a match. It was an entertaining game full of sloppy play from both teams. SU were stronger overall but it wasn't one sided or dull as ditchwater as under Bradbury. We need whole good games, not 1/4s or 1/2s or 3/4s as at present but it isn't yet time to announce the end of the universe or harking back to golden days under Bradbury - even tongue in cheek references to it (?)
oldcherry
Old cherry - it was tongue in cheek but Bradbury did have a higher win ratio than Groves and he didnt have money to spend. I see a direct parallel to the unpopular Kevin Bond being replaced by the woeful Jimmy Glass. This eventually led to a decent manager in Eddie Howe. I can see teh same thing happening again but who will the decent manger be - I suspect it will be Steve Cottterill often see in and around the area.
