Barrett: I felt I had to go

Former AFC Bournemouth captain Adam Barrett felt that he had to leave Dean Court after the Cherries strengthened their defensive options over the past year.

The Cherries sold the veteran centre half to League Two side Gillingham for an undisclosed fee before the Football League season kicked off over the weekend.

The 32 year old who had one year remaining on his current deal at Dean Court, wore the Cherries armband last season and made 28 appearances before injury restricted him to just one appearance in 2012.

Since joining the Cherries from Crystal Palace 12 months ago, AFC Bournemouth have signed Stephane Zubar, Steve Cook, Miles Addison and Tommy Elphick and was potentially set to be fifth choice under new manager Paul Groves.

Barrett told the Daily Echo...

"Bournemouth have got a massive squad there and I thought 'am I really going to feature?` I couldn`t see that happening.

"I felt I had to go and didn`t think there was really any option. I`d like to wish everyone there all the best."
