Cherries sign Barnard

Ahead of AFC Bournemouth's fixture against south coast neighbours Portsmouth, the Cherries have signed Southampton striker Lee Barnard on loan.

The 28 year old has been deemed surplus to requirements at St Fairies since Southampton's promotion to the Premier League and Barnard had been linked with a move to Championship side Brighton, but on the eve of the new football league season Paul Groves won the chase.

Barnard failed to score during Southampton's Championship promotion campaign, but did score 15 goals in 42 appearances during their promotion season in League One.

He will remain with the Cherries until January.

Groves told the Daily Echo...

"His goals-to-games ratio and the fact he has proved he can score goals at this level were the big factors, as well as his play.

"We are well aware of his play and intelligence and feel that he fits into what we are looking to do."

St Fairies!!!! love it
AFCB_FAN
Got to be a good signing, at least as cover while we have so many injuries
TheGolferUK
you would not ask "why" if you'd been at Oxford! Thomas/Tubbs combo does not offer goals.

Good move. We don't look like scoring without McQuoid on the pitch. LB is a proven striker at this level. Good value if only for the St Fairies reference. Can't wait for the game today now. UTCIAD

What a joke team we are we have the biggest squad in the division about 10 strikers, who are injured, not fit or obviously not good enough! Why do we let Groves buy so many players if he then wont or cant play them. The team against Oxford looked very similar to what finished last season who played dull lack lustre football and the Oxford report sounded the same! Now we have signed a Thug who will probably be suspended for most of his loan spell!
FletchersHead
I was at Oxford actually, and agree we need to finish chances, but a striker that didn't score last season and only got 15 in 42 games in a promotion season wouldn't seem like much of an improvement to me
afcblover
Well Barnard seems like scoring against us & now I guess I can't hate the player anymore. Could be a very good signing as I've always seen him as a big threat on the pitch.
Will-AFCB
Oh right I only read the title & didn't realise it was a loan. A loan till January is fair enough as we're just waiting for the other strikers to get fit. Just hope his form kicks in now.
Will-AFCB
I know Doble may not be everyones cup of tea but I think he could be handy just for a good partnership upfront.
Will-AFCB
I think it will be a good signing and think he will score against Pompey. And know I did not write this an hour after the game, honest.

If the player wear the shirt he should be supported by everyone. Look at him today, showed our strikers how to play real football. A goal on his first outing, can't complain about that.
DJD
...hats off to Barnard he put in a good shift today...
Garbo
I know someone else who scored on his debut. Rhymes with Rat Rubbs. Hope this is different!
simonhpieman
I take back what I said, he's far more useful than or other strikers by the look of today
