Cherries win race for Elphick

AFC Bournemouth are set to sign Tommy Elphick from Brighton.

The 24 year old central defender was linked to both the Cherries and League One rivals Portsmouth on Friday, but Elphick has opted to make the move along the south coast to Dean Court after Brighton and AFC Bournemouth agreed an undisclosed fee which is reportedly around £200,000.

Elphick is expected to sign a three year contract at the Goldsands Stadium after passing a medical and will become Cherries manager Paul Groves eighth signing of the summer.

The 6ft 2in defender played a key role in Brighton's promotion winning campaign in 2010/11, making 35 appearances, but hasn't featured for Brighton since their promotion to the Championship, after rupturing his Achilles tendon at the end of that season.

He has returned to action during pre-season, but has slipped down the pecking order and was expected to go out on loan during the first part of the season, but has instead made the move on a permanent basis and is now set for a new challenge.

Elphick told the Daily Echo...

"This club is hungry for success and all the players have a common purpose - getting into the Championship. I am fortunate enough to have done that and know what it takes. I wouldn`t have come here if i didn`t think we could do it...'

'...Bournemouth expressed an interest but, when I spoke to the manager, he said they were keen on doing something on a permanent basis. Seeing the direction the club is going, I don`t think it is the worst thing in the world for me to get out of my home town and start afresh.

"I just want to start training as soon as possible and then it will be up to the gaffer. He has got four or five very good centre-halves so it is going to be competitive. If the gaffer calls on me for Tuesday (against Oxford in the League Cup), I am sure I`ll be ready."

...Think this could work out to be a really good signing...maybe we could move Addison into CM?

And move Bowles and Barrett on?...

If this signals Bowles exit from the club, this is signing of the season by a mile!

As the article states, he was expected to go on loan, surely we should have had him on loan with a view to signing him when he had proved himself and his fitness.
