Cherries draw with Reading

AFC Bournemouth drew 2-2 with Premier League side Reading at the Goldsands Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Cherries manager Paul Groves selected a strong side for first the home fixture of the 2012 pre-season campaign with Shwan Jalal in goal, Simon Francis, Miles Addison, Stephane Zubar and trialist Jonathan Meades in defence, with Eunan O'Kane, Joe Partington, Shaun MacDonald and Marc Pugh in midfield with Wesley Thomas and Matt Tubbs up front.

In an entertaining game, Reading took the lead after 10 minutes when Adrian Mariappa headed past Shwan Jalal from a Reading free-kick conceded by Zubar.

Tubbs and Thomas linked up well to find the equaliser on the half hour mark and it was a well worked and well deserved goal for the home side.

Reading brought the game to a halt on the hour mark, making eight changes to their side and ten minutes later they also introduced former Cherries loanee Jem Karacan.

Two minutes later and Reading were leading again after Robson-Kanu had conned the linesman into awarding a penalty. Robson-Kanu made a miraculous recovery after throwing himself onto the manicured Dean Court pitch to step up and tuck the ball away.

It was then AFC Bournemouth manager Paul Groves turn to make changes, Gary Bowles, Steven Gregory and Lewis Grabban replacing Zubar, Partington and Thomas.

With just nine minutes remaining Marc Pugh twisted and turned to find the space to cross and his ball into the box was headed home by Miles Addison to make it 2-2.

Further changes late on were Jayden Stockley, Donal McDermott and Baily Cargill who replaced Tubbs, Pugh and Addison.

pugh played brilliantly, i wouldn't be surprised if reading came in for him pretty soon, it would be a great signing for them and would suit pughy too. francis played absolutely exceptional, both defensively and going forward he didn't put a foot wrong all game. partington however... just not up to it

...and you can tell all that from a 'friendly'...give Partington some chance eh?
Garbo
I thought Partington did very well - several others have posted the same, so it's all about opinions and it appears you are in the minority.

i thought parts was good today, he stopped reading playing with some good tackles and started a few moves off with a quick short pass to a more creative player, he played the holding midfield role very well in my opinion
afcblover
no i'm not just basing that on yesterday's performance, partington has been given many chances over the years even though he has been plagued by injuries. i just think he's too weak on the ball, always plays the nearest/easiest pass and is just not a creative midfielder with vision or strong in the tackle. arter does a better job there for me. just my 2p

Well I thought Partington stood out for playing well but opinions are opinions. I know how good O'Kane is most of time but I thought he had an off day so not shore how he got man of the match but as it's just a friendly I'm not botherd really. That left back may have been at fault for both goals but honeslty I think as the game went on he loooked allot player & with more expiernce & confidence he could turn out to be a pretty goood player.

"Always plays the easiest/nearest pass"... Thats the very first rule of possession football and probably exactly what Groves told him to do. You don't keep the ball by ignoring the easy ball and trying to get on the end of miracle passes.

^ EXACTLY, good point. It's the fans who complain about their players not playing 'hollywood' passes that soon get on their back when they keep giving possesion away - its the same at liverpool now with steven gerrard. The bournemouth boys are adapting to Grove's philosophy of possesion football, therefore in the role that partington played yesterday he did exactly what was required of him - besides it was our first real test of pre-season & we at times matched a premier league side so how about getting behind our boys from the off & save the slagging off till end of season ffs.
richh81
^ well said richh81. Parts and Francis were very good as were the majority of our boys that played. Kept possession well against a technically gifted and athletic side. Well-deserved draw IMO. Bring on the season proper. Not been this optimistic in a long time...
