Groves: Constantly looking to strengthen

AFC Bournemouth have been linked with two former Cherries midfielders with Groves admitting that both Huddersfield's Anton Robinson and retired Richard Hughes 'fit the bill'.

Former Weymouth captain, Anton Robinson joined the Cherries on transfer deadline day in February 2009. Signed by manager Eddie Howe the combative midfielder made his debut against Shrewsbury in the unfamiliar role of right back and immediately impressed.

In his more usual role of central midfield Robinson impressed and became another Dean Court favourite.

Robinson left the Cherries in August 2011 for an undisclosed fee, signing a three year deal with Huddersfield, but failed to really establish himself in the squad as they won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

Richard Hughes, who is now 33, retired from football a year ago after leaving Portsmouth.

Hughes joined Pompey in 2002 after four years at Dean Court, the Scottish midfielder made over 150 appearances for the Cherries before spending the next 9 years at Fratton Park.

Groves told the Daily Echo...

"They are both players we are more than aware of and players who have got good pedigree so, if something were to materialise, then certainly we would look at it.

"I know Richard very well. He has played at the highest level and, as a holding midfield player, fits the bill. Anton is somebody that people know. They are both decent players in their own right...'

'...You are constantly looking to strengthen areas that you feel maybe you could improve. I think you look at everything when you go through the squad."

...NO Paul....No!....look forward not back....signings so far like O'Kane,Grabban and Addison are young guys looking to move forwards in their careers....not sure that we should looking at 'washed up' types.....and how many games do we think Hughes might give us over a gruelling season?
Garbo
Definatley not Hughes, he never established himself at Pompey but Robinson should be a sure signing I have been saying all last year that we need a hard tackling defensive midfielder I am pleased that at last the manager thinks so too as our midfield are far too weak to compete against battling sides
kenny1
Yes to Robinson and no to Hughes, and wow can't believe its 10 years since Hughes left.

Hughes fitness must be really low so can't see that happening but a yes to Robinson. There are so many hard tackling defensive mids out there you just need to know where to look.

Also what about Stock?
Will-AFCB
Ridiculous suggestion - he also looks knackered on the photo not exactly inspiring is it?
luffbracherry
There are so many free agents that have been released from championship sides, surely we can find somebody that's not retired!
quinnyafcb
Hmmm we have signed Hughes 33 on a two year deal! Why?
cows-go-moo
hmm experience for an inexperienced side maybe. good signing imo.

^^ 33 year old man who has retired once. It really gets on my nerves when people go on about experience. Whats experience worth when you only last 60 minutes and guys half your age are turning you inside out?

Harry Redknapp is 65, we should sign him up for his experience also.
cows-go-moo
chris you've obviously not played football! experience is hugely important. We went to pot when Fletch left us. 33 is no age hardly dead is it! You lose speed and stamina as you get older but you do the simple things better. Hughes has played at the highest level regularly and I will gladly take 60mins out of a quality player.
Fitzyafcb
Experience is invaluable, but not when your body no longer lets you use it. This guy is 33 and has been offered better terms than we what we wouldn't offer Shaun Cooper. He has spent the last 12 months playing no football, but instead working in a pub in the West End. There were plenty of other options I am sure. All the experience in the world wont stop a 17 year old attacking midfielder showing you the well embroidered name and number stitching on the heels of thier fresh, neon boots, whilst you are gasping for air as a result of not staying well behind the play for at least 99.99999% of the match. I hope I'm proved wrong, but there are many just as capable younger players who we could have got in on younger contracts.
