King: Aiming to reduce number of injuries

AFC Bournemouth are aiming to reduce the number of injuries the squad suffers from during a season by using 'movement screening'.

It is a system that has been introduced to the first team and will be used throughout all the different age groups at the club, from the development squad to the various age groups in the youth team academy.

All the returning second year youth team players were given a injury prevention pack at the start of the summer break with the aim that players would return fitter before starting the heavy training programme of pre-season, a system which has mirrored how the first team have been treated.

AFC Bournemouth head youth team and academy physio Jonny King told afcb.co.uk...

'If we can identify abnormalities or asymmetries in the players' movement patterns then, hopefully, it will mean they get fewer injuries and they can spend more time training and playing matches,'

'It's something that is replicated by the first team, and we want it to run all the way through the club, all the way down to the youngest players in the academy.

'We audited all the injuries from last season and we were able to work out how much time the players spent in the treatment room receiving physio, and when we compare the results next year we would hope to see a reduction in the number of injuries...'
