Cooper: I'm no longer an AFCB player

Former AFC Bournemouth captain Shaun Cooper has turned down a contract to remain at Dean Court and has left the club.

Since the end of last season the versatile defender, who has played almost 250 games for the Cherries since joining the club in August 2005, has been thinking over a new contract offer.

It had previously been reported that Cooper was contracted to the Cherries until the summer of 2013, when the Daily Echo reported in February 2011 that he had signed a new two and a half year contract, shortly after former manager Lee Bradbury had taken over as boss following Eddie Howe's departure to Burnley.

But part of that original contract was a 12 month option, if triggered by 31st March.

Neither the Cherries nor Cooper triggered the option, so Cooper and the club opened fresh contract talks.

Cooper was offered a reduced one year deal, which he officially turned down on 1st July following his previous deal expiring on 30th June.

Former Cherries boss Sean O'Driscoll is reportedly interested in signing Cooper for League One rivals Crawley Town.

Cooper told the Daily Echo...

'...I explained to Paul (Groves) that I felt the one-year offer wasn`t good enough, but the club wasn`t prepared to budge so I turned it down.

"He knew full well that I wouldn`t be in (for training) on Monday as I am no longer an AFC Bournemouth player...'

'...It`s disappointing because I didn`t want to leave and the club knew I didn`t want to leave, but I felt I deserved two years...'

...cheerio......good luck, seem to recall that AFCB has stood by you despite your long injury absences?.....

The best of luck to him - he has been a good servant of the Club and at 28 with 3/4 more years of his career to go, is looking for some security for his family. .

No issues with any of this really and wish the player luck, but on this occasion I'm a little baffled at the decision to let him walk. I think he is good enough a player to bite the bullet and offer him the same deal but for 2 years - Even if it means we wont have to try playing against him this season!

Personly I would have gave him a 3 yr contract & now I'm angry at how he's been treated.

...no room for sentiment when you are seeking success...

It's obviously a shame to see one of longer term members of the squad walk away from the club, but a one year deal was realistic. He is unlikely to be a regular first choice player in either defence or midfield.

I am lol that Groves thought a out of contract player would turn up for training, funny stuff. Offering Cooper a one year contract doesn't sound like he's wanted that much to me and if he can get a two year contract at another club I say good luck him.

When the Great 2011 Player Cull took place Eddie Mitchell used the fact that players wouldn't show commitment and sign more than a one year contract as a reason to question their loyalty. And used it as a reason to say they should go. "I only want players committed to this club - bla bla bla". So when Shaun Cooper wants a longer contract and wants to show that commitment we see that Eddie Mitchell doesn't want to take his own medicine. Why am I not surprised.....

Good luck in the future Shaun, personally think the club were right to offer a one year deal, but you are entitled to turn it down.

I think Eddie is recognising the desire of the fans and the club generally to achieve success over the next two years. We need players that are either able to compete at this, or the next level. Appreciate Shaun has been a loyal servant and was potentially worthy of a year's extension, but not beyond that. Good luck Shaun and thank you.
