Groves: Cooper hasn't turned up for training

AFC Bournemouth manager Paul Groves has revealed that Shaun Cooper has failed to return to the club for pre-season training.

The Cherries returned to pre-season training this week, with manager Paul Groves and his backroom staff assessing the fitness of the squad following the summer break.

Those who have returned fit and ready for the new season will not need to return again until next week, whilst the rest will work this week on fitness.

However Cooper failed to turn up to training following his contract expiring last week.

It had previously been reported that Cooper was contracted to the Cherries until the summer of 2013, when the Daily Echo reported in February 2011 that he had signed a new two and a half year contract, shortly after former manager Lee Bradbury had taken over as boss following Eddie Howe's departure to Burnley.

But part of that original contract was a 12 month option, if triggered by 31st March.

Neither the Cherries nor Cooper triggered the option, so Cooper and the club opened fresh contract talks with his previous deal expiring on 30th June.

Cooper had previously revealed that the new contract offer was less than what he had previously been offered, but despite being pleased to hear that he was in Paul Groves plans for the new season, Cooper and the club have thus far failed to agree a new contract.

Groves told BBC Radio Solent...

'...Shaun hasn't turned up (for pre-season training) and Shaun is out of contract, At this moment in time we haven't come to an agreement and I think that's proving to be difficult.

'Everybody is different and everybody takes their own view of things as an individual and a player.

'Shaun needs to feel that the deal offered is right for him and at this moment in time that is not the case.'

....lack of respect or just a mis-understanding?...funny that this has been made public?

Sounds a little disappointing to be honest, Coops seemed like a top pro. On the other hand, he might feel very let down by the poor offer. A lot has been said about Pugh staying after the exodus but not many people thanked one of our most loyal players...

I think epsiodes like this tarnish a players character, but what many may not realise is that it is most likelly Shauns agent directing him to stay at home and they get a better deal. Players put a lot of misplaced trust in their agents.

^ yeah it proberly is but on the other hand I think he deserves a decent wage.

Being one of Shauns sponsors having had a chat with him at the sponsors evening event he told me he has not got an agent and always sorts out his own contract!
